Casa San Miguel in Zambales was the artistic destination for the senior high school students from Creative Writing and Theater Arts. Within Casa was an arts workshop led by SHS Creative Writing adviser Rae Rival-Cosico.
The workshop lasted for two days, with an audience of participants ranging from eight to fourteen years-old. Heavily involved in the workshop were Ezra Estrañero and Daniel Ben, both Grade 12 Creative Writing students. There were also PowerPoint presentations and activities that guided the flow of the workshop. These were led by the Grade 11 Creative Writing students. The first day consisted of a Fiction lecture presented by Sidney Lampayan and Buwan Sayajon, as well as a Zine lecture by Nelvie Daliva. The second day was a Poetry lecture conducted by Sophia Beatriz Reyes. Rounding out the facilitators were two of the Grade 12 Theater Arts students, Pink Stuart and Natalie Maligalig, who also had mini Theater workshops designed to engage the participants.
The second day of the workshop also featured an exhibition where the works of the participants were displayed to those visiting Casa. The final works included fully-illustrated zines of their fictional works, as well as postcards with poetry and drawings.
“Since it was my first time teaching kids hands-on, it was very nerve-wracking. but it helped a lot that it was both theater arts and creative writing facilitating, because I think the integration of different art fields made the workshops more engaging and exciting for the children. It was very fulfilling in the end,” said Buwan Sayajon on the experience of the workshop.
