A Grade 12 Music major at the Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA), Emanuel John Villarin, and his performance on the violin won the Laureate award in the Chicago Violin Competition (CVC).

With the CVC providing an avenue for young musical talent, judges with established backgrounds in the violin scene reviewed Villarin’s piece along with those of fifty other participants aged 7-17 years old in the young artists category. Submissions were handed in online, like many other events during the pandemic. The results were released last December 14, 2021.

In an interview with Variations, Villarin said he did not experience stage fright both in online competitions and live performances, as he made sure to thoroughly prepare beforehand. “Competitions for me [are like] a learning experience, a challenge.”

A veteran in music competitions, Villarin has been a part of numerous contests across the globe within the past two years, even placing 1st at events such as the 2020 National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA), Junior Strings Category and the 2021 New York Young Performers Prize, Advanced Strings Category. He also won silver at the 2021 Singapore Raffles International Music Festival Violin Solo Competition, Young Artistic Category and the 2021 Sugree Charoensook International Music Competition, Class A Violin.
