Adieu to the retiring PHSA employees

Written by Kaya Novicio and Sidney Lampayan

With each passing school year, we must also sometimes bid farewell not only to students, but to faculty members as well. These faculty members have shaped the lives of many students of PHSA, helping and guiding them during our stay. This is a final goodbye and love letter to the employees who retired this year, with key anecdotes and stories shared by some of the Ibarang community, about these lovely people.

Victor Emmanuel L. Flor

Victor Emmanuel L. Flor, often addressed as sir Flor by students, has been Sanghiyas Pangkat Mananayaw’s artistic director for 33 years, before retiring on January 14, 2022.

“Sir Flor tends to share a lot of knowledge to his students, and is known for his words of wisdom,” Marielle Lacamento, a folk dancer from batch Conde-Romero (Coro) stated. “[Sir Flor is] A very talented man that shares his knowledge through words and actions. He is like a book full of quotes kasi sobrang nakaka-inspire siya, and nakaka-motivate when it comes to daldal. Siya ang nag-serve as FD's father, and tinulungan niya kami mag-grow not only as a dancer, but also as a person. Sobrang inspiring niya kasi may laman talaga yung mga sinasabi niya, and ramdam mo na tagos talaga sa puso. Aside from being wise, he is also a fun and eccentric teacher, kasi he is very creative pagdating sa kung paano siya magturo ng certain things,” Denise Francisco, also a folk dance major from batch Coro, expressed.

Edison M. Lasam

Edison M. Lasam is one of the dorm houseparents in Makiling. He is more commonly known among students with the affectionate name, "Tay Ed". His role is in presiding over the safety and care of those living in the main dorm area, and he is often found in the Duran. He retired on March 14, 2022, and has been an employee of PHSA for 29 years.

“My dorm room was locked with the key inside it. I asked the houseparents for help, and Tay Ed assisted me, and even let me ride in his car. He busted open the door knob for me since the keys were inside, saving a lot of time and effort to find an extra key,” reminisced Grade 11 Visual Arts student Gabby Villos.

Adelina A. Revilla

Adelina A. Revilla, or “Ma’am Adel”, as students call her, was one of PHSA’s resident nurses. After 32 years of service, she retired on April 16, 2022.

Former student, Nicole Gahuman, recalls the time she caught chickenpox, and ma’am Adel was the one who took care of her. “Feeling ko, personally, siya yung less sensitive na nurse, ganon, like kahit ano pang sakit mo, hindi sya lalayo,” Nicole shared. “At saka, siya ‘yung pinaka-calm na nurse or houseparent. ‘Di siya nagpa-panic masyado,” she added.

The Variations team sends its well-wishes to the departing employees, and one can only hope that they will forever cherish the memories made in the fabled mountains of Makiling.
